SR1 is a Mississippi-based nonprofit dedicated to providing cradle-to-career support that empowers children and families to succeed from early childhood through college and into meaningful careers. Through our work, we strengthen families, expand opportunities for students, and help communities thrive—advancing greater economic mobility and lasting social impact.
Through our programs, children and families gain access to college preparatory and STEM education, tutoring, mentoring, leadership development, parenting and family support classes, academic enrichment, health and wellness initiatives, and college exposure opportunities. By supporting both students and parents, SR1 helps create lasting, multigenerational change.
We deliver these services through our trademarked SR1 C.O.O.L.™ Zones — Community Oriented Opportunities for Learning™ Zones. These are community-based hubs where children and families can access a wide range of educational and family support services in one place. Through the C.O.O.L.™ Zone model, SR1 provides tutoring, mentoring, life-skills development, college preparation support, family-strengthening services, and culturally responsive programs designed to help communities succeed.
In addition to serving families today, SR1 is also helping build the future of learning. The organization is developing advanced learning environments that incorporate technology, including safe AI-powered learning tools, coding and robotics programs, and technology labs designed to expand opportunity for students who might not otherwise have access to these resources.
Over the past several years, SR1 has faced unexpected challenges that required resilience, strategic leadership, and a continued commitment to our mission. To ensure that critical programs continued without interruption, the organization had to draw significantly from its operating funds.
These experiences reinforced the importance of flexible funding.
The SR1 Contingency Fund provides that flexibility. It allows the organization to remain strong during uncertain times by helping retain talented staff, engage expert consultants when needed, and cover legal or operational expenses that protect the integrity of our programs.
