Campus Infrastructure – Foundation for the Future

Total Estimated Cost: $7,000,000

Imagine the SR1 C.O.O.L.™ Zone Campus taking shape on once-undeveloped land – a sprawling 250-acre green expanse where the dreams of a better future will grow. The Campus Infrastructure initiative is the literal foundation of everything we plan: from initial land clearing and grading, to installing utilities, to engaging expert architects and engineers to design a world-class learning environment. This is more than just dirt and bulldozers – it is laying the groundwork for opportunity

What It Funds & Why It Matters: Campus Infrastructure covers all the essential site preparation and “soft” costs needed to transform raw land into a ready canvas for learning. This includes soil testing, environmental planning, road access, water and power lines – everything required to give SR1 C.O.O.L.™ Zone Campus a strong start. By investing in careful land prep and smart design now, we ensure the campus is built right from day one. We are preserving the natural beauty of the site (protecting wetlands and woodlands) and integrating sustainable features from the ground up. SR1’s “light-touch” design philosophy means working with nature, not against it – creating trails, outdoor learning labs, and green spaces alongside our buildings. This foundation is critical: without it, none of the visionary classrooms, labs, or playgrounds we imagine can ever rise.

ROI & Impact: Every dollar spent on a solid foundation yields immense returns in longevity and impact. Education is one of the highest-return social investments, and it all begins with a place to learn. For example, according to McKinsey Institute, individuals with higher education earn nearly $1 million more over their lifetime than those with only a high school diploma. By setting a strong infrastructure now, we enable those future earnings and innovations to take root. Moreover, each $1 invested in quality education yields an estimated $5–$15 in broader economic returns – returns that start by simply preparing the land for a state-of-the-art educational facility. In short, building the literal foundation enables the life-changing educational outcomes (and community benefits) that will flow from this campus.

Innovative Approach: The SR1 C.O.O.L.™ Zone Campus will be unlike any other. From the ground up, we are embedding multiple energy-harvesting and sustainable elements. Plans include solar panel arrays, geothermal heating/cooling systems, advanced stormwater management, and decentralized eco-friendly wastewater solutions – making the campus itself a learning tool for students in green technology. Our architects and engineers are using cutting-edge green design so that the land and facilities operate sustainably for decades. This proactive investment in infrastructure and design expertise not only saves money long-term (through energy efficiency and lower operating costs) but also teaches our students by example. Every time a student sees a solar panel or monitors a rainwater tank on campus, they are learning about stewardship, innovation, and problem-solving for a sustainable future.

Equity & Upward Mobility: Laying this literal foundation also means establishing a foundation for increased equity, enabling access to the highest global levels of education and mobility. Mississippi ranks (51st) in the U.S. for both median household income and per capita income. Mississippi’s rural communities have rarely seen investments of this scale in their backyards. By developing a cutting-edge campus in a rural area, we are leveling the playing field for children who historically lacked access to high-quality facilities. The SR1 C.O.O.L.™ Zone Campus will be a beacon that attracts resources, talent, and hope to the community. It sets the stage for positive social mobility – children and families will have more opportunities, more success, and a better quality of life. By anchoring the region with an institution that produces educated, skilled graduates for generations, we break cycles of poverty. This campus says to a rural student, “Your education matters just as much as anyone globally,” and it backs that up with a best-in-class environment for learning.

Inspire & Act: The Campus Infrastructure initiative invites donors to help “break ground” on hope itself. This is your opportunity to be part of the very beginning – to ensure that when construction starts, it starts on time, on solid footing, and with a bold vision guiding every shovel of soil. By contributing now you are quite literally building the future from the ground up. The urgency is real: every delay in preparation is a delay in opening the life-changing classrooms and programs that will serve our students. Join us in laying this foundation – every cornerstone you help place will support countless success stories in the years ahead. Your gift builds the platform on which all other successes will stand.
